(?) Dearnaley

M, b. circa 1735
(?) Dearnaley married an unknown person. He was born circa 1735.

Unfortunately, the names of Amos' parents are unknown. Church records do not indicate his birth. Nevertheless, present research shows that the Dearnaley Family resided in Mottram-In-Longdendale, Cheshire as early as the mid 1600s.

In February 1623/24, Oliver Dearnlie (of the Blackshaw) was a witness to the will of a William Robinson of Glossop. He, together with John Dearnlie, were listed under "debts which the sayd W Robinson doth owe"

On 22 Dec 1630 a William Derneley married Marie Redditch. They had a son John christened on 14 Dec 1632. A Joseph Dearneley (possibly the son of William) had a son William christened on 30 May 1665. Possibly this same William, had a son Joseph christened in May 1689. These people are at least distant relatives, if not in fact ancestors. According to Dr. Colin Rogers, a leading British Genealogist whose wife is a Dearnley, stated, "The [Dearnaley] family had originally come to the Glossop area in the late fifteenth century from Dearnley, a place in the parish of Rochdale, where we have found them living as early as 1292."

Close to our ancestor's time period, a Samuel Dearneley married Ann Neild on 5 Mar 1727. Was he Amos' grandfather? He must have been a relative of some sort. Unfortunately, marriage records for St. Michaels and All Angels are missing from 1755-1775. Given that Amos was born about 1755, perhaps we will never know the names of his parents.

What is of curious interest is that Henry Stuart, the progenitor of the Royal House of Stuart (himself a descendant of Henry VII as well as Scottish royalty) was born on 7 Dec 1545 at Temple Newsom in Yorkshire and was as a child created Baron Dearneley. Upon achieving manhood he was made Lord Darnley, though his name also appears as Lord Dearnley. While admittedly he was a Stuart and it is highly unlikely that we are related to him by blood, nevertheless he was the Lord OF Darnley/ Dearnley which demonstrably must have been a place in Yorkshire. So far, my attempts to locate this "Darnley" have failed.

A word of caution, Lord Darnley's mother was Margaret Douglass wife of the Earl of Lennox, and went by the name of Lady Lennox. His father was Matthew Stuart. Darnley was not Lord Henry's surname, but rather his title. Nevertheless, the upshot of the whole matter is that the Dearnley ancestry possibly originally came from an area in Yorkshire where the Dearne and Ley met. They would have gone to Rochdale by the thirteenth century. The hypothetical ancestor was known as "John" (let's say) of Dearne-Ley. Such place name descriptors readily evolved into surnames. His son/grandson simply became known as "Edward" or "George" (etc) Dearneley. Subsequently the parish of Dearnley in Rochdale bore his name.

*********************************************************************
Amos was christened on 17 Dec 1789 at St. Michael & All Angels church in Mottram-In-Longdendale. He and his wife were married in the same church, being members of the Church of England. The 1851 Census states Amos was born in Micklehurst, Cheshire whereas the 1861 Census states he was born in Carbrook, Cheshire. He was still working at age 71 as a woollen weaver. The family lived at 2 Carbook Lane in Micklehurst in 1851 and 1861. In 1851 he worked as a handloom weaver.

As a boy, age 6, Amos experienced an especially cold and bitter winter in 1795. He and his family were probably quite hungry since a food shortage was plaguing all of Cheshire. In 1801, Amos became a citizen of a "new" country: the United Kingdom; England and Ireland were joined into one. The next year the first steam boat was invented, a tug on the Forth and Clyde canal. And the very next year, 1803 the first steam locomotive was built by Richard Trevithick. As a child, Amos witnessed the explosion of the Steam Age.

In May 1803, Britain declared war on Napolean's Empire and his aggression. On 21 October 1805, Admiral, Lord Nelson won the Battle of Trafalgar and the bells at St. Mary's church in nearby Stockport rang continuously for three days celebrating the victory.

Because of the Napoleonic War, Britain was suffering economically and at the same time, machinery was revolutionizing industry. Croppers who would take one week to harvest, were now replaced by a machine run by an unskilled person who complete the same job in one day. People rose up in revolt and riots broke out in 1812 in Stalybridge. The protestors were known as Luddites. Of all periods, this was when England was closest to a civil revolution. Amos grew up a young man in difficult and turbulent times.

In January 1814, Amos married Ann Hurst in the same church he had been christened in and worshipped at. One can only imagine the wedding in the old stone church building. The winter of 1814 was one of the coldest and most severe. Eleven months later, they had their first child.

1816 became known as the "year without a summer" due to the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815. The eruption created global climate anomalies in the following years. In the Northern Hemisphere, agricultural crops failed and livestock died, resulting in the worst famine of the century.

In 1821, the population in Mottram-in-Longdendale was 1,944 and in 1831 was 2,144. The annual fair was held on April 27ths and a fair for cattle was held on October 31st. Although 1831 meant increased prosperity it was also a year of fear; a cholera epidemic swept the UK. Records show a seven year gap between the young Amos born 1822 and our ancestor William born in 1829. Were there other Dearnaley children in between who had succumb to the epidemic? Likewise, when did Amos senior die? If had lived to see 1832, this was the year working men were given the right to vote. And in 1833, factory owners were obliged to provide at least two hours of schooling to children in their employ aged 9-13. And unfortunately, in 1837 there was another virile outbreak of cholera. And this was followed by a severe winter in 1838 when frost and snow came in January and stayed through March.

Amos Dearnaley (c.1758-)  - Mottram / Tintwistle / Stayley, Cheshire / USA
Amos Dearnaley was born circa 1758 at near, Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire, England. He was the son of (?) Dearnaley. Amos Dearnaley married Mary Heaward, daughter of (?) Heaward, on 5 April 1779 at Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire, England. Amos Dearnaley died circa 1805 at Cheshire, England.

Amos was probably born near or in Mottram-In-Longdendale, Cheshire. Unfortunately no church records can be found for his birth. He and Mary were married at the parish church of St. Michael and All Angels. They were members of the Church of England.

"In the Middle Ages, Mottram was important in the [Longdendale] District. Mottram was the centre of religion as well as being a market centre for the surrounding villages, while, in the later 18th century, the manorial court-house was situated in Mottram. In the infancy of the cotton trade, Motram has sizeable cotton-spinning concerns in the Wedneshough and Treacle Street area. In the early 19th century, Mottram was the district centre for shoe-making and tailoring." On-line history.

In 1757, during Amos' childhood, there was a severe food shortage and protestors rioted in nearby Macclesfield. There were food shortage riots again at Macclesfield in 1762. In 1767, James Hargreaves's spinning jenny automated the production of light cotton yarn and would forever transform the area. And in 1769, Captain Cook discovered Australia. In 1775 steam engines were being developed and applied to factories. In 1776, the first cotton mill was built in Cheshire, in nearby Stalybridge. And in 1779, Samuel Crompton invented the "Spinning Mule" which started volume manufacture of high-quality thread. 1795 was a particularly cold and harsh winter accompanied by food shortages. Food riots broke out all over Cheshire.

The Parish of Mottram-in-Longdendale was 8 townships :-
Godley, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley, Mottram, Newton, Stayley,     Tintwistle (Inc. Ancient Chapel of Woodhead)
In 1754 there were 558 families in the Parish - 435 Protestants and 123 Disssenters.

Amos Dearnaley was born in 1826 at Mottram (Staley), Cheshire, England. He was the son of Joseph Dearnaley and Hannah Woolley. Amos Dearnaley married Hannah Hallowell on 21 July 1850 at Saint Chad, Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England. Amos Dearnaley died in 1900 at Bollington, Cheshire, England. He was buried on 1 March 1900 at St John's (Anglican), Bollington, Cheshire, England.

Notes from Ian Alan Worthington:
aka: Derneley

(Research):in 1851 Amon Desenley is at home with parents - must be "mine". Yes solved! He is at home must have been visiting his parents on the night of the census

1851 an Amos is at the Jackson's as a lodger next door but one to the Holloways - profession is undertaker! and his place of birth registered as "Micklechurch C Chester"

I may be confusing him with the Amos born 1822. That fits with the age of this one. He married Ann Knight in 1845 I think as in 1861 they are living in Rainow with a son and three daughters.

But the age of my Amos varies between 1826 and 1828

1861 census has the family in Lord Street recorded as DEMERLY (Amas) with the addition of a son william b circa 1855. Age of Amos is 35 and Hannah as 34.

Amos and Hannah were living next door to Thomas and Amanda in Lord St in 1891. They had a grandson named Joseph Gould with them?

Likely that Amos died in 1900 at the age of 71? ref MarQ Macc 8a 106

Not quite sure how I found the children Hannah, Edward, Sarah and Mary .......perhaps from the 1871 census .....yes. In 1871 he and his family are listed as DearnlEAY which is why he is difficult to find.
