According to the 1871 Census Albert and his siblings were born in Carrbrook, Cheshire but in the 1881 Census, he is listed as born in Staleybridge, Cheshire, not Rochdale. On 26 Oct 1863 his parents had him christened in Rochdale. As a boy, Albert lived at Lower Place just right outside of Rochdale proper. Albert sang in the church choir at Balderstone in Rochdale. At age 11 in 1871, he worked as a woolen piecer. In 1881, he worked as a clerk and was the head of the household at age 21. He resided at 93 Lower Place in Castleton, Rochdale, Lancashire. Living with him were all of his younger siblings. Presumably, this was the same residence that his parents had had. His parents had moved to Rochdale by 1866.
Albert might have met Ada at the Balderstone church in Rochdale. There were married at St. Alban's (Church of England) in Rochdale.
In 1891 Albert lived at 93 Platting Lane The Royal Oak and worked as an insurance agent. Later in life, Albert ran a pub in Rochdale called the Royal Oak. Upon his death, his wife Ada ran a general store. When his health failed, they moved to a shop on Crawford St and lived in the flat above.
The town of Rochdale is quite ancient. Archeology shows that the Romans occupied the village back in AD 78. The first documented witness to Rochdale is in the Domesday Book (1086), under the name of Recedham with about three hundred people living there. Not much remains from medieval Rochdale except the parish church which dates back to the twelfth century. The building has remainder somewhat the same though in the 1870s and 80s the clock was removed and the top of the tower was extended.

During WW1 he was first in the cavalry (Until the horses ran out) & then was a signaller. He was gassed in 1917 while sleeping. He and his fellows woke up blind and remained so for 2/3 months. He convalesced at Squires Gate Blackpool. To check if they were fit enough to go back to the front they were asked to run round a field twice. This was a continuous process. Their pulse & breathing were then measured. An old veteran told him to run around four times, that way he would get another month's convalesce. I have no infomation whether he did! Elsie Pack was working on munitions in London and he met her on his way back to the front. AD was a Cotton Spinner in the Eagle Mill from 1918 to early 1930's. Helped in General stores in the evenings that was his mothers.

******************************************************************************************
Albert Dearnley worked in one of Rochdale's numerous cotton mills as a mule spinner. The mule spinner was a machine run by three men to process cotton after it had been spun. The particular factory in which Albert worked was known as the "Eagle." His son, also named Albert, remembers bicycling out of town and looking over the moors. The vast number of chimneys from the numerous cotton mills looked like a forest.
Albert had served in the Great War and unfortunately was right in the midst of the Battle of Passendale, one of the most gruesome and terrible battles. Many soldiers were trapped in the mud quagmire. In 1917/18 Albert and his comrades were shelled and gassed behind the lines at Passchendaele (as it was called then). Everyone in the cellar was overcome by the mustard gas and suffered temporary blindness except the officer on the top bunk. This officer led the soldiers out in a caterpillar formation, he serving as the head and each one holding onto the other. They made it to the field hospital and from there were transported to Blighty. Albert did not recover his sight for several months. He spent several months on sick leave. He was on his way back to France, passing through London when Armistice was declared.
While in London, Albert met Elsie Pack who had been working on munitions at the Woolwich Arsenal. They fell in love and moved back to his home city of Rochdale. Struggling with deteriorated health, Albert eventually could no longer work in the factory that recycled machinery from the cotton mills and so went to work in the grocery and liquor store run by his mother. His father had just recently died on 5 Dec 1917. Albert was a storeowner for the rest of his life. !! - (Death Certificate lists "Retired Packing Case Maker" - MD)
Albert married Elsie at St. Peter's Church in Newbold, Rochdale, Lancashire in a double wedding with his sister. Albert was a fairly prominent person in their section of Rochdale and was comparably well-off. His son recalls their taking a day trip to the Isle of Man one time.
After Albert's wife died in 1959, he moved in with his son Albert and family. After two to three years he moved to Leeds where he married his Elsie's sister, Ede. She too preceded him in death.
Albert was a member of the Church of England and worshipped at St. Peter's in Rochdale. He had ginger coloured hair and light eyes. He spoke with a broad accent. His favorite food was pigs trotters (feet) and tripe. He also liked black pudding (made out of pigs blood and grissel).
Albert was cremated.
