As Joe was deaf, he was sent south to a workhouse for deaf children, and the other young child also was sent to a different workhouse.
Ethel kept in touch with the younger children, and as each of them reached 14 she pulled them out of the workhouse and set them to work - Violet was to work in the mill, but they wouldn't take her because she was malnourished, and she was a scullery maid for a while.
