Stanley George Smith
ID# 11, b. 13 August 1892, d. 8 October 1965
Stanley George Smith was a Baker, Later Window Cleaner & then worked for Standard Telephones & Cables.
Stanley was born at home at 9 St. John's Terrace at Whetstone, Finchley. He was an officer in the First World War and during WWII served on the home guard, especially the fire brigade. He helped with putting out the fires when the Docks in London were bombed during World War II. Early on he worked with his brother as a window cleaner and carpet beater.
One time when he was servicing a posh house, he met Ellen there who was a maidservant. That's how they first met.
Stanley enjoyed gardening. He would often comment on having "orts," a word with which Albert Dearnley was unfamiliar. Its an old Middle English word meaning left-overs.
Stanley lived at 71 Berkeley Crescent, New Barnet, Hertfordshire with his wife. He was active in the East Barnet Baptist Church, especially in the summer of 1936 when he helped then put on a church play.
On retirement, he suffered from arthritis & part of his therapy involved making rugs (at which he became quite adept). On Saturday afternoons he would watch the football results and eat winkles.
Stanley worked for Standard Telephone and Cables company and was later in life transfered to Harlow where they had opened a new office. They then lived in Harlow, Essex at 156 Halling Hill
He later died of rheumatoid arthritis. - D.S.

Ellen Gertrude was named after Ellen, her mother's twin, and after her mother Getrude. Her death certificate filled out by her daughter Phyllis lists Ellen's place of birth as Baldock Hitchin. She attended school in Littlington. She was a devoted homemaker. Besides looking after her own children Phyllis and Denis, she likewise for several years took care of Daphne and Maureen, her nieces. She loved knitting quilts and entertaining her grandchildren on holiday. She was active in the Congregational church and attended the "Homemakers," a women's group. Ellen lived at 156 Halling Hill, Harlow, Essex. This was a set of bungalows.
She used to say, "You have to eat a little bit of dirt before you die."
When Clare was a child, Grandma Smith would always give her half a pomegrenate when she visited and Clare didn't like having to pick out all the seeds, put them in her mouth and then spit them back out once you got all the pip out of the seed. She would always bake Mark a Lemon Merangue pie.
