HAYES GAZETTE - FRIDAY JULY 25th 1947
GRASPED WATER PIPE & DIED
UNUSUAL CASE OF ELECTROCUTION
An electric current passing through a Hayes man's body from a defective electric inspection lamp was earthed when he grasped a water pipe in the loft of his home causing his death from electrocution.
This evidence was given at Uxbridge on Wednesday when the coroner (Mr. H.C. Broadbridge) recorded a verdict of accidental death of Harold Dearnaley a 52 year old Caterers assistant of 15a Craven Close Hayes, who was found lying in the loft by his daughter when she returned from work on July 17th. The last person to see him alive was Mrs. Doris Badden of Milton Close Hayes said "Mr. Dearnaley waved to me through the window & mopped his brow as if he was working hard around the house". He did not meet her as usual in the afternoon when they would walk to work together.
Edith Mary Dearnaley gave evidence of finding her father lying on his back on the floor of the loft when she returned from work at around 5.30pm. She had used the inspection lamp her father had used and was holding and had never received a shock from it.
Attracted by a woman's voice calling for help Charles Newland of Spencer Avenue went to Dearnaley's house and climbed into the loft. Dearnaley was holding a water pipe in his left hand and in the crook of his right arm, the lamp and flex.
William Franklin - Mains foreman at Metesco, Hayes explained that a twisted wire from the holder of the lamp was attached to the metal clip. The
current it caused would not have been apparent until Dearnaley caught hold of the water pipe which would earth through his body.
It was a perfectly safe type of lamp but needed regular inspection.
