If his wife came from the Rotherhams who were landed gentry in Bedfordshire (if, for example, his father-in-law was the George Rotherham who was knight for Bedfordshire in five Parliaments), then it is likely that the Easts were of the landed gentry too.

Susannah Rotherham

She may have been the daughter of George Rotherham and Jane Smith, with siblings Anne (1562), John (c 1563) and Effe (1564) of Luton. John Rotherham (c 1563) married in *Southill*, Beds., in 1587. With reference to the 'Hundred' of Flitt and to the Manor of Luton in Bedfordshire, the Victoria History notes that both followed a similar descent. After passing to John Cressy in 1422, the Hundred, like the Manor, passed from the family of Cressy to the Wenlocks and afterwards to **the Rotherhams** who sold it in 1612 to Lewis and Edward Marbury. I take this as possible evidence that Susannah Rotherham came from the family of Rotherhams who were landed gentry - especially if her father was George Rotherham who [see below] was knight for Bedfordshire in five parliaments. Notes show: the sister of Alice Smythe, the second wife of Sir John Fortescue (1533-1607), Chancellor of the Exchequer, married George Rotheram, knight for Bedfordshire in five Parliaments.
