Henry Barringham
ID# 4237, b. 1853
You'll notice, in the '81 census, that Henry and Charlotte Barringham are
living with James. Henry later founded a confectionery business - I think
the name was Henry Barringham Sweets Ltd (and judging by an entry in another
census, he may have got the idea from the Turver family). His nephew Robert
Barringham returned from working as a silversmith in Meriden, Connecticut
(whence he'd followed his uncle George, as I explained to the family, in
Cornwall - hence the Californian cousin), in order to take over the family
business. (Still with me? :-) ) Then, Henry's nephew Robert married
Charlotte's niece - another Charlotte Turver, George Turver's only surviving
child. Robert and Charlotte Barringham's only child was my mother. My
father ran the confectionery business before closing it, in an era when such
small companies were not viable (as I understand it) - at which point he
moved into lecturing. My late step-father (who was also my god-father) was
the long-serving Chairman of Bassett's, of Liquorice Allsorts fame. So
this, obviously, is why I like chocolate so much!
