Birth:
Thomas Dearnley was born in January 1786 at Cartworth Mill, Wooldale, Yorkshire, England,
Birth date is an estimate.
There's been a debate about the location of Cartworth Mill in the local history group. The original thinking was that it was at Hinchliffe Mill which is at least in part in Cartworth township. However it's clear that it was the original manorial mill and that was located in Holmfirth close to the chapel at the site traditionally known as the Gartside Estate now occupied by the bus station. The Gartside family were the farmers of the manorial rights to the mill.
This identification has the complication of the mill's not being in Cartworth township at all but in Wooldale. I think the explanation lies in that early in the medieval period there was an entity called the Free Chase of Cartworth, dating back to late Anglo-Saxon times. This lay entirely in Kirkburton parish. Sometime after the Conquest some townships were hived off and others, from Almondbury parish added. The name Cartworth Mill would make sense if it dated back to this period.
This identification would suggest that John Dearnally may have lived at the mill or a cottage on the mill estate but he wasn't the mill tenant.
