Josiah Ryder

It is clear from Josiah's will that this Josiah was indeed a child of the Robert and Alice Ryder who entered Blackley around 1715-1717, and therefore a brother of my 6x great grandfather John Ryder (1710-1782). Like John, this Josiah is likely to have been born before their arrival in Blackley.
Although I am confident that this Josiah married Hannah Dernelley, I think they were childless, and as he survived his wife there are no references to her or to children (or other Dernelleys) in his will. Instead he leaves his possessions to his Ryder siblings and their children, and in so doing teaches us a great deal about them.
It is clear for the first time, for example, that all Robert and Alice's known children survived their 1729 deaths and matured to adulthood. - SP.

Josiah Ryder left a will on 18 June 1784. 
 
In his will, Josiah leaves all his clothing to his "brother James Ryder." He leaves £5 each to his nephews James Pearson and John Pearson. The IGI shows a marriage of a George Pearson and a Sarah Ryder at the Collegiate Church in Manchester on 3 February 1754. There is also a baptism of a John Pearson to such a couple at St Matthew's, Stretford, on 18 August that year but I cannot yet find James' baptism.

Josiah leaves the remainder of his estate equally between:
     His brother James Ryder;
     His sister Alice Brown;
     His nephew Josiah Ryder of Gorton;
     His nephew Robert Ryder of Bradford;
     His nephew Robert Ryder "of Brick Hall";
     His niece Alice Travis.

The will was duly witnessed and signed on 18 June 1784. A note appended to it shows he died some five weeks later, on 25 July 1784. The estate was valued at between £200 and £300 for probate.
