Charles was raised in the Foundling Hospital. The Coram Foundation archivist reports:-
"We have a note of his birth as 18th November 1846. He was admitted to the care of the Foundling Hospital when he was just over 1 year old, on the 13th December 1847.
He would have been given the name 'Charles Darnley' when admitted. This would have been to protect the confidentiality of the mother, and would not have been her family name. His mother's name is recorded as 'Emma Bromley'. The application ( the 'Petition') to the Foundling Hospital was number 20389. This will help locate further information at the LMA.*
The only other information I can give from our register is that Charles would have gone to stay with a foster-mother, until about 4 years of age. This was Mrs Eliza Cavey, in Chertsey, Surrey."

'The Foundling Hospital in London, England was founded in 1739 by the philanthropic sea captain Thomas Coram. It was a children's home established for the "education and maintenance of exposed and deserted young children." The word "hospital" was used in a more general sense than it is today, simply indicating the institution's "hospitality" to those less fortunate.'
'All the children at the Foundling Hospital were those of unmarried women, and they were all first children of their mothers.'
'In 1847 a successful juvenile band was started. The educational effects of music were found excellent, and the hospital supplied many musicians to the best army and navy bands.'
