Sudden death of town councillor stuns Tetbury

THE sudden death of one of Tetbury's most respected councillors has left the entire town in shock.

Cllr John Dearnley, 63, was rushed to hospital from his home on West Street, Tetbury, on Saturday morning and died later that day.

A well-known and popular figure in Tetbury, John Dearnley was best known for running the Thames and Cotswold Bicycle Shop for many years, a long-serving member of the town council and serving a term as mayor.

Cllr Stephen Hirst, current mayor of Tetbury, said the news had stunned residents.

"The town is in total shock and disbelief," he said. "He was a real gentleman and a 100 percent town character, he seemed to have been here forever."

Family doctor, close friend and fellow town councillor Dr Tony Walsh added: "He was a member of the town council who kept everyone honest. He put his heart and soul into the town and everything he did was for the good of the community. He was a totally honest man and always fighting for the common man."

John Dearnley moved from Suffolk to Tetbury in 1985 and served the town in many areas.

He was treasurer of the local Labour party for 14 years, became a town and then district councillor - a rarity for a Labour councillor. He served as Tetbury mayor from 2004-2005.

During this time on the council he secured the Bristol and Bath bus routes from Tetbury and campaigned for the pedestrian crossing outside the Post Office on Market Place that has just been given the go ahead.

Cllr Kevin Painter said: "He was a compassionate man. I saw in John an idealist who did all he could for our town. If anyone deserves heaven it is John. I was very honoured to call him a friend."

Mr Dearnley became a Quaker when he married Sallie, whom he was very proud of.

He leaves three sons, Daniel, Thomas and Edward and two grandchildren.

Talking to Cllr Painter the family said: "John was a truly honest and trustworthy man. He was a friend to everyone he met and set the standard we would do well to emulate."

An ambulance was called on Saturday shortly after 9am and took Mr Dearnley to hospital suffering excessive blood loss. He died at 3.30pm.

Police said Mr Dearnley suffered injuries to his neck are not treating the incident as suspicious.

There will be a private family cremation at Westerley Crematorium, near Bristol, next Monday morning, with a joint Church of England/Quaker Service of Thanksgiving at St Mary's Church, Tetbury at 2.30pm.
