Alice Mill died in 1621 in Barton Stacey but the final line of her will says it was written on '… the seventeenth daie of October in the fourteenth year of the reigne of our sovereigne lord king James of England France Ireland and of Scotland fiftye'. Using a regnal year calculator, this gives 17 October 1616.
So Alice Mill is herself the "the widowed sister of Unknown (?)" (wife of Roger Dernelly). Because she called Roger Dernelly 12781 her 'brother', the previous reader of the will wrongly assumed her maiden name was Dernelly. I have no direct proof, but I believe her maiden name was Prince.
Four Prince sisters are recorded as christened in Micheldever, Hants (near Barton Stacey): Margere 07 Nov 1539, Gouudie 16 Feb 1548 (also known as Gooda), Johanna 14 Mar 1546, Elizabeth born 11 Apr 1555, chr 17 Apr 1555 (old familysearch). I think that there are at least two more - Alice and Agnes. Their parents were James and Elizabeth Prince, who died 1583 and 1588 respectively in Micheldever and whose wills are on the Hampshire Catalogue (1583B/69 and 1588A/060).
By process of elimination, I surmised that Unknown (?) c1543, wife of Roger Derneley c1542, was Johanna, the sister born 1546. She also went by the names Johanne (familysearch, father's 1583 will) and Jone (familysearch, mother's 1587 will). Several records come up on familysearch for Jone Prince for her mother's will date 1587. One of these lists her spouse as 'Durnelle'. I rest my case.
I think Roger and Johanna may have had 2 more children in addition to Daniel and Mary. In her will, Alice lists many of her relatives in family groups. Having mentioned her 'brother' Roger, Alice then mentions a niece whose name looks like Schelly, with surname Vyne (Wyre/Wyne)*, who could be a married daughter of Roger's, then niece Mary Dernelly and her child, then nephew Danyell Dernelly and 'children', and then 'I give to Beniamyn Dernelly's child xxs'. So I assume that Beniamyn is a son of Roger's who had died before 1621. I cannot find any trace of Beniamyn. - Janet Davies
See Roger Derneley
* now thought to be Schellys/Scolles/Scholistira Durmelly who married Anthony Vyne in 1596. See Scolles Durmelly.
