Alfred Patrick
ID# 17048, b. 20 May 1841, d. 23 December 1894
The Australian ancestor of the Patricks, Alfred Patrick, married Maria Dearnley Patrick in 1883 on the goldfields of far North Queensland. He is harder to trace with no second name but I have found out a few things about him trying his hand at various businesses, for example as a licensed victualler running pubs on the goldfields and in Cooktown, Qld. - family member.
Birth:
Alfred Patrick was born on 20 May 1841 at Lambeth, Surrey, England,
Birthplace is from an unverified web source. If correct, then this is likely to be the Alfred Patrick with father Mark Patrick (1798-, Yorkshire) & mother Mary (1801-, Yorkshire) found in the 1851 UK census in Belvedere Road, Lambeth, London.
An Alfred Patrick, aged 21 arrived in Brisbane on the 1 Nov 1862, on the ship Sultana, from Plymouth, England.
Also an 18 year old Alfred Patrick was a member of the crew of the vessel 'George Marshall' during a journey from London to Sydney in 1860.
This all fits with the verbal family history of Alfred's involvement with ships & sailing & the subsequent family interest in the same.
It is also thought that he had some kind of connection with Robert Towns who founded Townsville and the Burns Philp Shipping Company which ran ships from Townsville to Sydney before expanding into Melanesia and the Pacific.

The Sultana left Plymouth on the 2nd August with the following passengers...
Second cabin: includes: Mr. Patrick.. and about 400 in the intermediate and third cabin.
In the course of the voyage 52 persons were infected with measles, 45 with intermittent fever (chiefly during the run through the tropics), 63 with diarrhoea, 4 with whooping cough, 6 with pneumonia, 1 with acute rheumatism, and 1 with scarlet fever. Of the total number thus afflicted 17 died, and the last death took place on the 22nd ultimo, the subject being a child six months old.
