No Dearnley connection established yet.
John's mother's maiden name was 'Cooper'; paternal grandmother was 'Critchlow'; maternal grandmother was 'Ollerenshaw'.
A family recollection:
The story handed down to me from Jack's wife (Marjorie Hartley) was that when John was born, a business associate/friend/shooting companion of father Edgar Montague offered a guinea if he could name the newborn for him! Apparently he got his guinea!!
The Hallam family lived at Hey Barn, by Carr Meadow, Little Hayfield. Unsurprisingly, they were into dairy farming but also haulage. The story goes that Edgar Montague was the first in Derbyshire to own a tractor and the family were big time into transporting materials in the construction of Kinder reservoir. With the Critchlow connection, they also transported coal from Mellor Moor. Incidentally, Jack and his brother Colin set up Hallam Bros Garage in Hayfield, which for a start repaired and sold lorries.
Edgar Montague Hallam was a serious guy and would not have named his son Dearnley just for the guinea. Jack was definitely not a relation of any Dearnley. But his father must have had a close business relationship for him to name his son so. - John Powell.
