It seems that Arthur was left at the workhouse between birth and age 2 and left aged about 15 as a pauper apprentice to the Grimsby fishing industry. The poorhouse must have made him extremely strong as he managed to survive at sea and also became skipper by the age of 24, which was very early (usually about 30).
