At the top end there was a row of buildings in the middle of Briggate, so forming two narrow streets; the one on the East side was "Shambles", the one on the West side was "Back Shambles" Kirkgate ran from the Market Place, eastwards about 400 yards, to the parish church of St Peter.

(Shambles was the area used by the butchers; cattle would be driven in, slaughtered, cut up and sold).
