He refurbished and quipped, sometimes at his own expense, a number of excellent laboratories, and insisted on the provision of a new science lecturer."
from 'History of Harrison College'

Andrew Hassell (manager of the West Indies Rum Distillery Limited where from 1893-1930’s Professor D’Albuquerque gave advice as a consultant) adds:-
Harrison College is the top school in Barbados for many years. It is famous for its mathematics and science students. One of them “Emtage” created the first internet search engine.
Professor D’Albuquerque left Barbados to return to England I believe due to ill health. We have a copy of that letter in our minute book from that period.
He also was instrumental in the Barbados sugar cane industry from the 1893-1910 period. The formation of the sugar cane breeding program is a major deal for the global sugar industry. By all accounts, he was a very smart scientist.
John owned a 72 acre estate in 1913 in Spring Garden, Barbados and was one of the founding members of the EMPIRE cricket club in Barbados.
His wife Beatrice helped found the Barbados RSPCA… she was at the first meeting and an initial donor.
