James Allen emigrated to America and resided in Pennsylvania, Illinois, and eventually Iowa, where he operated the Lamoni Roller Mills.
He was baptized a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on 25 August 1867 at Kewanee, Henry, Illinois, by James Lord. He was confirmed by J. D. Jones and Clifford.
He was ordained a teacher on 22 December 1867 in Kewanee by J. Lord and Clifford.
He was ordained a priest on 27 November 1878 and an elder on 12 March 1880. James attended the Kewanee, Illinois Branch and the Iowa branches at Coalville and Lamoni. He was president of the Coalville, Iowa Branch for several years and was a counselor to the president of the Fifth Quorum of the Elders.
