John McNab was the son of John McNab and Jean Flockart.

John apparently received some medical training, given his stints as HBC ships' surgeon in 1779, 1791, 1792, and 1799. He apparently took this practice ashore while at Albany Fort, James Bay (no records of medical certification have yet been found).

One online source suggests that John died in debt, of malaria, sometime after May 1819 in Baldoon, Upper Canada (Ontario).
