Ellis Dennerley died on 5 June 1864 at 14 Cecil Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England, at age 73 years and 11 months
Saturday 18th June 1864
DIED.
On the 5th inst.,in the 74th year of his age, Ellis
Dennerley, late landlord of the Pine Apple Inn, Rye-
croft. At an early age he enlisted in the 82nd Regi-
ment, and served in the Peninsular war. He was at
the battles of Orthes, Pyrennees, and Vittoria, for
which he received a medal and three bars. During
one of the above engagements he received a ball in his
left side, which he carried in his body over 50 years.
After his death the ball (which weighed nearly 1oz.)
was extracted by Dr. Gardiner. While living he ordered
his son that at his death the ball must be extracted
from his body, and left at the Pine Apple, in order to
satisfy curiosity that he had carried a ball in his side
for half a century, and his orders have been carried out.
