In 1837 (January/February) Joseph, Jane and 3 children were received as paupers into the Prestwich Workhouse.
Later in the year, Joseph was tried for the murder of the governor of Prestwich Workhouse but was acquitted on the grounds of insanity and imprisoned for life.
He was sent to the Lancaster Asylum.
