SMUGGLED TOBACCO
Another customs conviction On Thursday John Higgins and his uncle James Higgins were each convicted in a penalty of £100 for being concerned in the removal of a quantity of tobacco upon which the legal duty had not been paid, and which was offered for sale by Mr Trueman on the 6th inst to Mr Hornby in Lady lane. When Mr Trueman was fined £10 last week it was mentioned in our notice of the case, in the last Mercuy that two persons had assisted to load the cart in which the tobacco was conveyed to Mr Hornby's warehouse. These two parties were the defendents in the present case, which in all its essential particulars was the same as that we noticed last week. The defendents reside in Jack lane, and are in the tobacco trade. Mr Bond the solicitor at the instance at the Commissioners of Customs, appeared in support of the prosecution and Mr Sanderson, solicitor on behalf of the defendents. [Leeds Mercury 21 Sept 1844]
SMUGGLED TOBACCO - More convictions at Leeds. From a paragraph which appeared in a greater portion of our last weeks impression it will be remembered that Mr David Trueman, druggist and wharfinger, was yesterday week convicted before Griffith Wright esq and D. W. Nell Esq, at the Leeds Court House, in the penalty of £100, for removing a large quantity of unmanufactured tobacco without a legal permit. On Thursday last, other two men named James Higgins and John Higgins, who had been in custody from last Saturday, were each convicted before the same magistrates and Henry Hall Esq. in the like penalty of £100 for being concerned in the same illegal removal. John Higgins is the nephew of James Higgins and they are tobacco manufacturers, and the latter is the owner of an unoccupied beer house in Jack Lane, Hunslet, from which the smuggled tobacco was removed.
