Note: on 24 December 1887 at Newton, Wales,

An extraordinary accident occurred on Christmas Eve at Newtown, North Wales. Mrs Singleton, the wife of Mr Singleton, who has recently come from Sheffield, his home to take up the position as manager of a boot shop for Messrs Simpson & Stead at Newton, went into the backyard about nine o'clock in the evening, when the covering of a disused well gave way under her and she fell into tho well, which is 15 feet deep, and contains 10 feet of water. The screams of her yonng children attracted the atention of Mr Singleton, who reached down the well and caught hold of his wife just as she rose to the top of the water, when a quantity of debris gave way, and Mr Singleton fell in. The further cries of the children brought a man named Thomas Dearnley to the spot, when he fell partly down the well and broke his leg. Other assistance soon came and rescued the parties, who narrowly escaped drowning. A long ladder, had to be let down the well to get Mrs Singleton from her perilious position. Her face was badly cut with debris, and Mr Singleton was badly injured. Dearnley was taken to the infirmary in a very bad state.
