Ben's mother's cousin's husband's aunt was Maria (wife of John Dearnley- see 1861 census),
or, to put it another way,
Maria's nephew's wife's cousin's son was Ben.
No wonder they just called him 'nephew' in the 1861 census!
There is also the possibility of a much simpler relationship between the two Marias via the Moorhouses - namely first cousin once removed. Hard to prove as it involves a John Moorhouse which is a very common name.
His name was registered as Benjamin Fitton, mother's surname Tinker. After going to live with John and Maria Dearnley, the D name appeared as a middle name. I think this may just have been (unofficial?) recognition of his (unofficial?) adoption by Maria and John. They referred to him as their 'nephew' but the relationship seems to have been much more distant than this, as previously mentioned. I think that they lived in a community where everyone was distantly related to everyone else, and I think it may have been more a case of a childless couple willing to take in a motherless child.
