George Thomas Denton

ID# 10501, b. 12 December 1861, d. about February 1945
George Thomas Denton was also recorded as Thomas Denton.

Birth:
George Thomas Denton was born on 12 December 1861 at Emley, Yorkshire, England,

George Thomas Denton, was recorded as the 'Step-son' of William Dearnley in the 1871 census and as 'Son' in the 1881 census - but still with his mother's surname "Denton". However, George's birth was so close to the marriage of William Dearnley & Mary Ann Denton, I suspect that he was William's biological son and have listed him as such. - MED

The birth of George Thomas Denton and George Thomas Dearnley are registered 1Q 1862 Wakefield R.D. vol.9c p.1.

George Thomas Denton was the son of William Dearnley and Mary Ann Denton.

Baptism:
George Thomas Denton was baptised on 9 February 1862 at Emley, Yorkshire, England,

No. 1030 'Feb 9th 1862; Ann [dau of] Emma Denton; abode: Elmley Moor; Spinster'
No. 1031 'Feb 9th 1862; George Thomas [son of] Mary Ann Denton; abode: Elmley Moor; Spinster'
Elmley Parish Baptisms

note: It seems that the vicar was sticking closely to the rule book here. While George Thomas was born prior to the 25 Dec 1861 marriage of mother Mary Ann Denton to William Dearnley, at the time of baptism Mary Ann was a 'Dearnley'.

Marriage:
George Thomas Denton married Annice Crowe, daughter of George Crow and Eliza Lindley, on 19 December 1886 at Parish Church, Woolley, Barnsley R.D., Yorkshire, England,

Caleb Howard

ID# 10508, b. December 1790
Caleb Howard was also recorded as Caleb Heywood.

Birth:
Caleb Howard was born in December 1790 at Holme, Yorkshire, England,

Birth date is an estimate.

Caleb Howard was the son of John Howard and Mary Lockwood.

Baptism:
Caleb Howard was baptised on 1 January 1791 at Almondbury, Yorkshire, England,
 .

Marriage:
Caleb Howard married Betty Beardsell, daughter of Thomas Beardsell (II) and Sarah Kaye, on 1 April 1810 at Mottram, Cheshire, England,

'No.21; Caleb Howard of the Parish of Mottram and Elizabeth Birchall of the same Parish were Married in this Church by Banns....'
Both made their mark
Witnesses: Abel Beardsell & Jonas Moorhouse.

The granting of a licence for the marriage of Caleb Heywood & Elizabeth Beardsell was dated the 17 Mar 1810, Saturday, (in the Almondbury registers) 3 weeks before the Mottram marriage date which was a Sunday. Both were alleged to be over 21 but from his baptism Caleb Howard appears to have been only 19. She was 27. The application was supported by an Abel Beardsell. As both made their mark they wouldn't have been in a position to correct the spelling.

My guess is that there were objections to the marriage, probably from the Howard side, on the basis of his age & the age disparity and that's why they got the licence. I think they then hopped over the tops to Cheshire to get married although the licence was only for Almondbury. Even on her death registration Caleb knocked a couple of years off her age (or maybe she told him how old she really was). The irony is that their granddaughter Grace & her husband objected to their daughter Eliza marrying my grandfather, apparently on similar grounds, and sent her off to visit relatives in NY to try to break them up.

Birth:
Betty Beardsell was born in 1783
 .

Betty Beardsell was the daughter of Thomas Beardsell (II) and Sarah Kaye.

Marriage:
Betty Beardsell married Caleb Howard, son of John Howard and Mary Lockwood, on 1 April 1810 at Mottram, Cheshire, England,
