This Joseph did look like the Joseph D who married Mary Motherby in 1757.
see Joseph Dearnley
Both had sons who were mariners in London (Thomas and John Smith D).
Mary Motherby died in 1774, so that fits with the argument for there being one Joseph with 3 marriages 1757, 1775, 1784. But this involves Joseph changing from tailor and mercer, to butler, to innkeeper. Innkeeper is often a second career so this doesn't unduly worry me, although tailor to butler is a little more strange!
A burial of a Joseph Darnley taylor, aged 80, at Doncaster on 26 Jan 1800 has been found. We know that William, the son of Joseph (of Snaith), was in Doncaster in 1800. So this appears to exclude the above proposed match.
