The Shiercliffes of Ecclesfield claim ancestry from one William Shiercliffe of Ecclesfield living (1436/37) during Henry VI's reign. The Nicholas Shirecliffe who married Emmota Fenton (and was described as 'gent' in various wills) would have been related to the better-documented Nicholas Shiercliffe of Ecclesfield Hall, but the exact nature of this relationship is not known.
Nicholas Shirclif is named as son-in-law in Richard Fenton's 1550 will.
