Emanuel Marsland
ID# 18925, b. about 1652
The first mention of Emanuel is as the father of an illegitimate child & he is "Marsland alias Thornton". He then seems to have married a Susannah (I only have her later burial). For the most part he is then simply Marsland at the baptisms of his children, including Leah, but the alias appears again at Susannah's burial. He then remarries Susannah Hinchliffe and has further children. He is now of Cliff End and several times he's Marsland alias Thornton or vice versa and even just Thornton. It looks as if he himself may have been illegitimate but I can't find his baptism in either parish under either name. Thornton is, however, somewhat more of a local name, presumably from Thornton in Bradford. - Ian Goddard
An alternative explanation of the ‘alias’ is that Emanuel was born a Thornton (or Marsland) but his father died and mother remarried and so he was known by step-father’s name from a young age (as is suspected for William Dearnilie als Newton 1585) - Janet Davies.
I think Leah's father Emanuel may have been born at Penistone to Jacobi Thornton in 1650. Jacob also had a daughter in 1648 (Martha) but by the time his third child, Abraham, was born he was calling himself Marshland. He died at Penistone in 1692 under the name of Marshland. I can't find any record of his birth, marriage or reference to a change of surname, but there don't seem to be any other Jacob Thorntons or Marshlands living in Penistone around that time, so his circumstances remain vague. - Kathleen Armistead.
