"In August 1805, John Whiteley [aged 22] sent a letter to his father (also John) requesting money to be sent to London, so that he could buy his way out of military service. He was in the Cold Stream Guards stationed in London in anticipation of a planned invasion by Napoleon."

The above letter (& a second letter sent a week later) include passages that clearly indicate that the marriage to Betty Platt had irretrievably broken down.

In his will, he leaves all his real estate in a trust under the control of his two friends, James Broadhead of Knowl, clothier and John Carter of Upperthong, Grocer, to be held in trust by them until his youngest surviving child is fourteen years of age. At the time the youngest child, Hugh, was five years old. He also provides for an annuity of 13 pounds per year to Hannah and her occupancy at Greenowlers for the rest of her natural life. The will states that when Hugh is 14 years of age (1850), John`s oldest son, Joseph is to inherit Greenowlers and John's one- half ownership of the Lumbank Mill is to be inherited by all his children as tenants-in-common. The will also provides a sum of 50 pounds to Esther, his daughter by Betty Platt.
