John Whiteley

John Whiteley Sr. was a clothier and owner of the Lumbank Mill, a fulling mill in the Holme River valley. The family had prospered in the wool business for nearly three hundred years being the direct descendants of the Whiteleys of Rishworth Hall. John, Sr. was the great grandson of Jeremiah Whiteley.

Birth:
John Whiteley was born in 1748 at Hoowood, Austonley, Yorkshire, England,
 .
When John was 21 years of age he began an account book (extant) entitled John Whiteley - my book 1769" in which he recorded all his transactions as a clothier. The notebook lists the purchases of raw wool and the sale of woolen goods in named accounts over some thirty years. The names are primarily those of the families living in the area at that time - Tinker, Walker, Wimpenny, Sykes, Haigh, Hinchliffe and others. In 1782, John, Sr. built a new house at Greenowlers, a short distance from Hoowood where he had been born. We know the house was built in 1782 , because the lintel stone over the doorway shows the initials for John Hannah and Whiteley and the date 1782.
