- Henry Carey (c.1687-)
Performer & composer J. Herbert Darnley (1872-1947) composed extensively for Dan Leno. a.k.a. Herbert J. Darnley
Herbert Darnley was born Herbert McCarthy and it is said that he was descended on his mother's side from Edmund Kean (very famous actor born in 1787). Kean's mother was Ann (Nance) Carey - she was descended from Henry Carey (composer). Ann Carey left Edmund as a small child and was supposed to have married a man called Darnley. She had two children by him, Phoebe Carey and Henry Darnley one of whom I presume Herbert's mother was descended from. Kean's mother made a reappearance when she heard how successful he was becoming and enraged Edmund by introducing him to 'his brother Henry Darnley'.
A passage from a book 'The Idols of the Halls' recalls 'Bert Darnley, a comedian of astounding versitility, who writes his own and other people's sketches and plays and was author of Dan Leno's most successful song hits. Herbert Darnley, born McCarthy is descended on his mother's side from the great little Edmund Kean. Often I have seen Herbert don the Hamlet dress of the electric Edmund's which 'customary suit of solemn black', Bert has long possessed. To carry on the Kean tradition still further, the droll Darnley has given the stage name of Nance Carey to his clever daughter, because that was the maiden name of Edmund Kean's mother from whom Bert is descended'.
