Children of Elizabeth Quick and Eli Dollin

James Dollin

ID# 256, b. 1763
Note:

They were members of the Presbyterian Church in Ilminster and were the only Dollin family in the congregation.
James most probably was born in Somerset as Dollin was a surname found in Somerset at this time period.
There was a death registration for a James Dollin in 1837 in the Taunton District which is 10 miles from Ilminster. Whether this is our James or not cannot be said.

More Dollin family info can be found at Les Dollin's website:
see Early Dollin Family Trees in Dorset.

Note:

Some degree of doubt here:

A James Dollin married Betty Wills on 22 Dec 1781 at Ilminster, Somerset.
Somerset & Dorset Family History Society

A James Dollin married Anne Wills on 1 Dec 1791 at Ilminster, Somerset.
Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837

At first glance it would appear that this is likely to be the same James Dollin, but the above transcripts show James to be a bachelor at both marriages. (I have not seen the original documents). The children's baptisms do show the respective mothers fitting correctly with the above dates.

An online Ancestry Public tree shows James' father as Silas Dollin (1720-1895). As this would make him 175 years old, I have chosen to ignore this for the moment. -MED.

Birth:
James Dollin was born in 1763 at Somerset, England,
 .

Marriage:
James Dollin married Betty Wills on 22 December 1781 at Ilminster, Somerset, England,
 .

Marriage:
James Dollin married Ann Wills on 1 December 1791 at Ilminster, Somerset, England,

A James Dollin married Anne Wills on 1 Dec 1791 at Ilminster, Somerset.
Pallot's Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837

There is some uncertainty here as the Somerset & Dorset Family History Society
transcription shows James as a Bachelor at the time of this marriage.

Children of James Dollin and Betty Wills

Child of James Dollin and Ann Wills

Eli Dollin

ID# 257, b. October 1783, d. February 1851
Note:

Eli was baptized in the Old Meeting Presbyterian Church in Ilminster, Somerset. Ilminster is fourteen miles north of Lyme Regis where he eventually became a sailor. In 1780, Lyme Regis was still a larger port than Liverpool. Eli lived in Lyme Regis from at least 1808. His marriage record says "residing in this parish" indicating that he was not originally from Lyme. Eli was a listed as a "seaman" on the baptismal record of his daughter Ann in 1815 and on Susan's in 1819. In 1825 he was listed as a "mariner" on the baptismal record of his son John.

The burial record says he was 68 years old, thus born in 1783. This confirms my identification of him as being the Eli Dollin born in Ilminster.

On 23 Nov 1824 Lyme was hit by a horrendous storm that damaged the Cobb and many houses along the seaside. The population in 1821 numbered 2,269 and in 1831 2,407 with 449 houses.

In 1841 Eli must have been at sea, as he does not appear in any census record. The family, however, lived at Grace Clifford House (another source has "Green Cliff 's House" - MED) off of Bridge Street in Lyme Regis, his wife Elizabeth was listed as head of household.
- Daniel Stramara.

Birth:
Eli Dollin was born in October 1783 at Ilminster, Somerset, England,

Birth date is an estimate.

Eli Dollin was the son of James Dollin and Betty Wills.

Baptism:
Eli Dollin was baptised on 19 November 1783 at The Old Meeting Presbyterian, Ilminster, Somerset, England,
 .

Marriage:
Eli Dollin married Elizabeth Quick, daughter of (?) Quick, on 8 March 1808 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England,
 .

Eli Dollin died in February 1851 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, at age 67 years and 4 months

before 20 Feb 1851.

Burial:
Eli Dollin was buried on 20 February 1851 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England,
