John Roberts also went by the name of John Robert.
Note:

There was only one Roberts family in Hastingleigh. John was born after his father's premature death. He was baptized on 16 Sept 1832. When John grew up he became an agricultural labourer. In 1851 he lived with his mother-in-law and step-father-in-law in Waltham, Kent. He was a farm laborer. In 1861, he worked as an ag laborer, correctly listed as age 29. The 1871 Census has his correct age as well. They lived at 13 Hastingleigh Street and John worked as a labourer. He was a coachman in 1872. The electronic version of the 1881 Census might have a misreading of 52 as 57.

The town of Hastingleigh dates before the Conquest.

John Roberts was born circa 1832 at Hastingleigh, Kent, England.

He was christened on 16 September 1832 at Hastingleigh, Kent, England.

He was the son of John Roberts and Elizabeth (?).

John Roberts married Louisa Hall, daughter of John Hall and Elizabeth Mills, circa November 1854 at Elham, Kent, England,
Because John Roberts and Louisa do not appear in the marriage records for Hastingleigh, the couple presumably was married in Challock--as was the custom to marry in the bride's church. Unfortunately, no marriage records for Challock exist for this time period.

James Dollin

b. circa 1750
Note:

They were members of the Presbyterian Church in Ilminster and were the only Dollin family in the congregation.

James most probably was born in Somerset as Dollin was a surname found in Somerset at this time period.

There was a death registration for a James Dollin in 1837 in the Taunton District which is 10 miles from Ilminster. Whether this is our James or not cannot be said.

Born: BET 1740-1765.

James Dollin married Ann (?).

Note:

Eli was baptized in the Old Meeting Presbyterian Church in Ilminster, Somerset. Ilminster is fourteen miles north of Lyme Regis where he eventually became a sailor. In 1780, Lyme Regis was still a larger port than Liverpool. Eli lived in Lyme Regis from at least 1808. His marriage record says "residing in this parish" indicating that he was not originally from Lyme. Eli was a listed as a "seaman" on the baptismal record of his daughter Ann in 1815 and on Susan's in 1819. In 1825 he was listed as a "mariner" on the baptismal record of his son John.

The burial record says he was 68 years old, thus born in 1783. This confirms my identification of him as being the Eli Dollin born in Ilminster.

On 23 Nov 1824 Lyme was hit by a horrendous storm that damaged the Cobb and many houses along the seaside. The population in 1821 numbered 2,269 and in 1831 2,407 with 449 houses.

In 1841 Eli must have been at sea, as he does not appear in any census record. The family, however, lived at Grace Clifford House (another source has "Green Cliff 's House" - MED) off of Bridge Street in Lyme Regis, his wife Elizabeth was listed as head of household.

The Dollin ship was known as the Majestic amd most probably was owned originally by Eli the Elder. The Majestic was a 120 ton topsail schooner built in Newport, Monmouthshire in 1838. It appears in the Lyme registry of ships in 1865 and was owned by Eli Dollin (Jr) 2 Mar 1869 and Frederick Dollin 2 Feb 1873. The Majestic was dismanteled at Hull in 1894. Records of ship registrations are piecemeal and an earlier record could have existed. - Daniel Stramara.

Eli Dollin was born circa November 1783 at Ilminster, Somerset, England,
before 19 Nov 1783.

He was christened on 19 November 1783 at Ilminster, Somerset, England.

Eli Dollin died circa February 1851 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England,

He was buried on 20 February 1851 at Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.
