For his countless friends, the news of the death of Charles E. Dearnley, 1960-62 Director of Rotary International, was as saddening as it was unexpected. The Philadelphia, Pa., Rotarian suffered a heart attack August 18 and died the next morning.
"Ed" Dearnley was president of Dearnley Brothers Worsted Spinning Company, Inc., worsted-yarn manufacturers and distributors in Philadelphia. He was born in Philadelphia and attended the University of Pennsylvania.
A member of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia since 1936, a Past President of that Club, he served as District Governer and as a Committee Chairman and member. At the time of his death he was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Rotary International.
Earlier he had served Rotary International on the Aims and Objects Committee, the Finance Committee, the Magazine Committee, the North American Transportation Committee for the 1957 Convention, and The Rotary Foundation Committee.
In Philadelphia, Rotarian Dearnley was a past president of the board of managers of the Roxborough Memorial Hospital, a director of the Theodore Presser Foundation, and board chairman of the Theodore Presser company, music-publishing firm.

Margaret Leithiser Dearnley, 104, a homemaker and volunteer, died Wednesday at the medical center of the Rydal Park retirement community, where she had lived for 22 years.
Mrs. Dearnley was a former volunteer for Roxborough Memorial Hospital, where her late husband, Charles Edwin Dearnley, was president and/or chairman of the board for 33 years. She organized a women's auxiliary, which has continued to help with the hospital's children's department.
She celebrated her 50th year of service in 1978, when a chapel was dedicated in her husband's memory.
Mrs. Dearnley was born in Reading and moved to Philadelphia in 1898. She graduated from Girls' High School, where she was president of her class, and attended what is now Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa.
She lived primarily in the Germantown and Chestnut Hill areas of Philadelphia, where she was a 67-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Germantown and a former participating member of the Chestnut Hill Stage Crafters. For many years, she was Roxborough representative for the Visiting Nurses Association of Philadelphia.
When her husband died in 1961, they had been married for 46 years.
