Obituary: Chorister Norman Dearnley
Oct 27 2009 By Huddersfield Examiner
HE was a man who devoted his life to music.
Norman Dearnley, senior vice-president of Colne Valley Male Voice Choir for 68
years, died on October 18 at the age of 85.
Born on January 18, 1924, Mr Dearnley’s lifetime of song started with Linthwaite
Parish Church Choir.
His mother, maiden name Phoebe Ramsden, was a well-known soloist and
singing teacher so when Norman became a boy soprano soloist no one blinked
an eye.
And that’s where George Stead, one of the big names from Huddersfield’s 20th
century traditions, came into Mr Dearnley’s life.
The singing of The Holy Supper Of The Apostles at Golcar Baptist Church by
Colne Valley Male Voice Choir, under the direction of the great man, made a
big impression.
By the age of 17, in 1941, Mr Dearnley had been auditioned by George Stead
and given a place in the choir, just before the war forced an interval in his career.
He had to leave his job in the spinning office of a local mill and in 1942 got his
call-up papers and was drafted into the Royal Corps of Signals.
He became a Morse code operator and served in the Normandy campaign from
the D-Day beaches to Luneberg Heath.
In 1947 Mr Dearnley retrained in engineering and worked for the David Brown
Corporation, where he remained until he retired in 1984.
He joined Huddersfield Choral Society and was a member for almost 40 years,
participating in a great many concerts both in this country and abroad.
He was also a well-known baritone soloist and sang with the quartet party
Concorde and a double quartet known as The Veil Singers.
He was an active member of the Army Veterans’ Association until ill health
prevented him from participating and he was also a member of Colne Valley
Probus Club.
Mr Dearnley leaves a widow, Joyce, through whom he inherited three
stepchildren and he took great pleasure in watching his two grandchildren
grow up.
A funeral service was held yesterday at Christ Church, Linthwaite.
Mr Dearnley was a well-known figure, and indeed ‘a man of note’.

In fact, despite being one of eight children of the blacksmith Thomas, Abel was reputedly manager of not one but two cotton mills by his early 20s (family lore says 21, but that could be an exaggeration). Then the bottom fell out of the cotton market, and he ended up on restricted rations, although still with quite a comfortable home in Buxton, Derbyshire, and was able to help my dear grandfather Harold, an emotional casuality of WW1 after surviving most of the war as an ammo truck driver between the trenches on triple rations of spirits but seeing many pals blown to smithereens, into a job as Rolls Royce salesman in Derby and then into a small garage back in Buxton. Great grandpa Abel was also a no-doubt blustering Methodist lay preacher. Despite his emotional difficulties from the war, grandpa Harold was a lovely old guy, on whom my English Rose grandma Bessie Bailey took pity, although she sometimes claims to have regretted breaking off her engagement to the vicar in her native Hampshire.
