We originally had John as the son of Samuel D.
However:-
At Mouselow: "One (house) was built by I Dearnley in 1751."
We don't have any "I. Dearnley" in the area at this time. The 'I' of the house date stone is probably a misreading of a mossy and weather-beaten inscription. My suspicion is that it is a 'J'.
In 1846: "The other farmers …, at Mouselow, widow of John Dearnley 18 acres …"
The above widow is Sarah Booth (1761-). We used to have have her husband (John's father) as Samuel, Samuel Dernely but that doesn't fit with the 'I' above (assuming continuous family occupation of the Mouselow house). John's grandfather was Jonathan (1709-) of Hobroyd.

Simmondley link:
John's widow lived Dinting, just north of Simmondley.
