My father always referred to him as John Bridge Poole. He was quite surprised when he got a copy of his birth certificate and saw it as Briggs. However, at a later date, I found references to bridge work and funding done in Yorkshire and the spelling on bridge was brygge, so perhaps this explains it.
John Briggs Poole was also referred to a Bill Pigeon for once referring to some crows, saying those pigeons are flying low. He weighed over 23 stone and his wife over 18.
