Oliver and the Cow
Court of 30 Sep 1651
.... they [i.e. the jury] present and saye that as Oliver Dearnillie servant to John Ibbotson was drivinge a Cowe of one George Heeley into the Lords foulde there to be impounded the saide George Heeley came with greate violence and made a rescue from the Lords foulde of the saide Cow therefore he is amercyed to the Lord 3s 4d. s.
[Under Honley township]
Alsoe they present and saye that George Heeley did make an affray and drawe blood upon the bodye of Oliver Dearnillie therefore he is amercied to the Lord 10s.
from a transcript of the Almondbury manorial rolls 1641-1660 - "Homagers for the Lord Protector. Almondbury Manor Court Rolls Part 2 1641-1660. Ed Peter Hurst"
Ian Goddard notes:
The format of the court records is that matters affecting the manor come first and are followed by sworn men of the individual townships reporting more general offences which took place there. The rescue comes in the first category as George Heeley would have had to pay a fee to the manor to release the cow from the pound. Presumably the 3s 4d reflects the fee being avoided - maybe with an additional penalty and seems to be standard for a rescue irrespective of the "greate violence". Affrays always come into the township section & this is under the township. It takes into account the "greate violence" and again follows the standard rate - 3s 4d for an affray & 10s for an affray with blood drawn. Significantly this comes under Honley which was Oliver's township. Honley has been much redeveloped but I seem to recall there being a pinfold somewhere near the top of Eastgate in which case he might not have been driving the cow to Almondbury itself. This may have been the entrance to it:

Secondly at some stage I think we have Oliver's family at Woodbottom. The Heeley family is associated with Woodbottom: This area is always known as the Heeley House bends.
