DIED IN SOUTHPORT
NEWS has reached me of the death in Southport of Mr Albert Darnley Raine, who will be, remembered by many Wearsiders for more than half a century of work for the Congregational Church. He was 94, and had been living with his daughter in Southport for several years.
Former secretary of the South Hetton Coal Company, he lived in Brookside Gardens, Sunderland, and in Grindon, before moving to Newcastle some time after the nationalization of the coal industry and his retirement.
In recognition of his services, his name was entered on the roll of honour of the Congregational Union of England and Wales. For 50 years he was a member of Sorley Street Church, Sunderland, serving as Sunday school teacher, deacon, church secretary, and giving 28 years' service as organist and
choirmaster. He was deacon at the West End Congregational Church, Newcastle, for ten years.
SERVICE TO CHURCH
He served for many years on the executive of the Durham and Northumberland County Union, was secretary to Sunderland and District for 25 years, chairman from 1932 to 1933, and treasurer from 1936 to 1949. He also served as a trustee of the Lady Hewley Trust.
He was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and had been a member of the Institute since 1900.
His son, Captain A. P. Raine, lives in Hurstwood Road. Sunderland. There is another son in Australia and another daughter in Rhodesia.
