SHORTHAND IN STATE SCHOOLS.
As will be remembered, some twelve months ago, the Minister for Education (the Hon. D. H. Dalrymple) granted permission for shorthand to be taught to the scholars in State schools. Of this privilege many scholars have availed them- selves, and the first annual examination was held in connection therewith at the Technical College rooms, School of Arts, on Saturday, 28th November, when twenty six candidates presented themselves. Mr. W. Whitworth kindly consented to act as examiner, and wo append results. The examiner states that the papers were worked out creditably, considering the youth of the candidates and the test set before them. Special mention is made of Miss Elsie Dearnaley, who attained 94 per cent of marks, and of Master T. Noyes for neatness of outline and 87 per cent of marks. Prizes and Pitman's certificates will be awarded the successful students early next year. The following is the order of merit of successful students; - Corresponding: "Manual" -A. From 30 September 1931, her married name was Norris.

Birth:
Dorothy Gladys Dearnaley was born on 6 June 1909 at Cairns, Queensland, Australia,
 .

Dorothy Gladys Dearnaley was the daughter of William Robert Dearnaley and Charlotte Maria Hartill Butler.

Marriage:
Dorothy Gladys Dearnaley married Randolph Evelyn Norris, son of Frederick Norris and Lavinia Clara Percy, on 30 September 1931 at Queensland, Australia,

St. John's was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Wednesday, September 30, when Dorothy Gladys (second daughter of Mrs. L. Dearnaley, Abbott-street), was married to Randolf Evelyn (Joe), youngest sort of Mr. Norris, Clare-street. Rev. W. P. Hohenhouse was the celebrant. There were artistic bowls of white flowers and greenery on the altar. Mrs. Topliss rendered 'My Prayer" during the signing of the register, and Mrs. Newberry was the organist.

The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her uncle, Mr. C. Butler, looked charmingly sweet in her long ivory frock of bridal satin, made on classical lines. The beautiful veil was embroidered, and the bouquet consisted of white gladioli and bridal roses entwined with fern. Her long rope of pearl lent a charming dignity to the ensemble. The chief bridesmaid, Miss Freda Norris, chose blue silk voile for her ankle-length, frock, which was trimmed with pink rosebuds and worn with a pint and blue hat. The small bridesmaid's (Miss Narda Fitzsimmons) frock was a replica of the chief bridesmaid's, the color being pink, trimmed with a blue, and a tulle cap was worn with it. They both carried sweet evening purses, presents of the bridegroom. Mr. J. Norris undertook the duties of bestman.

The reception was held at the residence of Mrs. Dearnaley, who was hostess. Her charming satin beaute was of soft dove grey satin, with pink tonings. Her bouquet consisted of fragrant lavender stocks. The tables were flower bedecked, the blooms coming from Mrs. W. Pasley's garden in Ravenshoe. The handsome cake was the work of Mrs. Fitzsimmons.

For her going away ensemble the bride chose a floral silk voile, with a coatee and a lemon hat to tone. The bridal and travelling frocks were the work of Miss L. Ohlsen.

The presents received were both numerous, and useful, a number of cheques being included.

The young couple have taken up their residence, in Cairns-street.
