Permitting Drunkenness
Henry Mellor, beerhouse keeper Hinchliff Mill, was charged with permitting drunkenness in his house at Hinchliff Mill on the 15th inst. Mr Meller appeared for the defence. Police Constable McKenzie stated that he went to the defendant's house in company with Police Constable Alderman and found three men named Ben Dearnley, Samuel Green and Wright Newton on the premises drunk. Police Constable Alderman corroborated. Mr Meller called a number of witnesses for the defence, who all denied that the men were intoxicated. Wilson Hardy Landlord of the Victoria Inn was called on behalf of the prosecution and stated that on the night in question Green called at his house with three other men and asked for four glasses of beer. He told them they had had enough and refused to fill any beer and advised them to go away. They went in the direction of Hinchliff Mill. Defendant was fined £2 and costs. Ben Dearnley, Samuel Green and Wright Newton were charged with being drunk on licensed premises and the case against Newton and Dearnley was dismissed and Samuel Green was fined £5 and costs.
