Dr J N Dearnaley, who was consultant pathologist at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny, died suddenly on 22 January at the age of 61.
James Noel Dearnaley was born on 3 January 1920 and graduated from the University of Liverpool in 1942, after which he served in the RAMC in India for three years.
On his return to Liverpool he took up pathology and later became assistant pathologist at Leicester Royal Infirmary. In 1954 he was appointed consultant to the Sirhowy and Rhymney Valley group and when that group amalgamated with the North Monmouthshire group in 1965 his territory was extended to
cover an area from Caerphilly and Tredegar to Ebbw Vale and Abergavenny. In the years that followed -until the new district hospital at Abergavenny was commissioned in 1969- he controlled all these laboratories. Despite the difficult terrain and the hazards of winter Dr Dearnaley visited each laboratory daily and by dint of remitting work also maintained a rapid histological reporting service.
His skill as a general pathologist, and particularly as a histologist, gave his colleagues the utmost confidence in his judgment, and he was always courteously available to hospital and general practitioner colleagues, offering the GPs open access to his department's services. Efficient management of routine services he left to senior technical staff, with whom he had a warm and affectionate relationship that was reflected in the loyalty and quality of their work, hallmarks of his own standards. Dr Dearnaley disseminated his knowledge and experience in regular contributions to the activities of the postgraduate centre-a task that he took great pains with, but never found easy. During these peripatetic years he played an important part in designing and planning his new laboratory, his competence being shown by the fact that after 10 years no appreciable defect in its planning has emerged.
He was a gentle, kind, and courteous man, with a strength of character easily summoned when needed; through all his activities a bright light of integrity shone. Music was a lifelong interest. He was an excellent violin player and turned to the viola to strengthen the orchestras with which he played. His home was frequently enlivened by chamber music ensembles. Dr Dearnaley's wife, Lucie, supported him in all his activities with a generous hospitality that made their home a haven from social stresses for colleagues and friends. He is survived by her and by two sons, one of whom has followed his father into pathology.-AH.
