SHOCKING DEATH. ---- On Tuesday, Mr D. Dearnaley of Tintwistle, near Glossop, in this county, (joiner and carpenter) was erecting a temporary roof over a sawpit belonging to Messrs. Sidebottom's, of Waterside, manufacturers. While he was in the bottom of the pit, a piece of timber, which was not perfectly nailed in the roof, fell upon him and killed him on the spot. He has been employed by the above firm for nearly twenty years, and was much respected by them. He was a steady, sober and pious man; he has left a wife and five children to deplore his loss and sudden bereavement.

Surgeon Superintendent: Dr Stone
Sailed Gravesend, London 30th November 1859 - arrived Lyttelton 16th March 1860
"We have never had such a list of deaths to publish," stated the "Lyttleton Times," when reporting the arrival of the Clontarf (Captain A. W. Barclay) on March 16th 1860. It was a bad weather passage, especially when the ship was approaching the New Zealand coast. The mortality among the twenty-eight children was appalling, nearly all auccumbing to measles or whooping cough. In the long death roll there were five adults, one of them being an apprentice on the ship. Dr Stone, who was the medical officer in charge of the passengers, did all he could during this very trying passage, and worked himself so hard that eventually he was laid up. The ship was 106 days on the voyage.
