Framlingham and Saxmundham were six miles apart and Saxmundham was known for its big markets. Perhaps Mary and Herbert met there.

A James Hammond was born in Framlingham in 1818. Could this be Mary's brother or was she the wife and widow of this James? In 1881 there was a significant concentration of Hammonds in Framlingham.

In 1861, Mary lived alone with her daughter Henrietta at 34 High Road Whetstone in Finchley, Middlesex. Her husband had been institutionalized by this time. Mary worked as a dressmaker. Her son Henry was not living with them at the time.

Note:

Hannah was christened on 24 June 1825 at St. Mary's in Bury, Lancashire which is about ten miles south of Todmorden. She eventually would wed in this church. The 1851 and 1861 Census state she was born in Stansfield, (West) Yorkshire; however, the town presently does not exist. She worked as a reeler of cotton in 1851 and a domestic in 1861.

In 1881 Hannah was widowed and lived at 11 Merefield St. at the Confectioners Shop where she worked as a grocer and confectioner. Living with her were her daughters Deborah and Ada as well as a grand-daughter Hannah Dawson age 6, who was born in Rochdale.
