I have now compared the signatures given by John and James at John's marriage to Tabitha Castle in 1780 to the signatures given by the 2 witnesses John and James, sons of William Dearnelley 1721, when their brother Samuel married in 1785 (but note that Samuel 'made his mark', as did brother Jonas in 1780). John and James were obviously taught by different people as they have distinctive ways of shaping J's and y's. There is a difference in the D of James's signature between the 2 occasions, but I am confident that it is the same John and James in 1780 and 1785.

At the marriage of James 1748 to Sarah Hinchcliffe in 1772 James 'made his mark', but then signed his name in 1780. However, the fact that his brothers Samuel and Jonas were unable to write their names in 1780 and 1785, together with the fact that John and James were taught to write by different people, indicates that James had learned to write as an adult ie between 1772 and 1780.
