John Dearnaley

ID# 5540, b. December 1779, d. 4 January 1843
John Dearnaley was also recorded as John Dearnally.
He was also recorded as John Dearnley.
He was also recorded as Dearnaley - (spelling not found but added for indexing.)

Note:

A puzzle has presented itself with the 1816 will of Samuel Dearneley of Crosscliffe, Glossop. see Samuel Dearneley

The co-executors were:
Samuel Dearneley of Hodge, Cheshire - Dyer (Samuel's nephew) see Samuel Dearneley
John Dearneley of Whitfield, Derbyshire - Schoolmaster (relationship unknown) see John Dearnaley
James Sheppard of Whitfield, Derbyshire - Clothier (neighbour)

There are currently two options for the presumed relationship of John D. of Whitfield, Schoolmaster to Samuel Dearneley of Crosscliffe.

Option 1:
Samuel Dearneley of Hadfield c.1703- (currently an 'end of line') is the same as Samuel Dearneley of Hadfield 1699-1761, the son of William and Mary of Hadfield.
     {Samuel Dearneley = Samuel Dearneley}
John D (schoolmaster) would then be a second cousin, one time removed. Common ancestors: Joseph Dearneley (1642-) and Elizabeth Hopwood.

Option 2:
Samuel Dearneley of Hadfield c.1703- (currently an 'end of line') is a brother of John D of Hadfield, Mottram then Woodhead, 1708-.
     {Samuel Dearneley is a brother of John Dearnaley}
John D (schoolmaster) would then be a first cousin, one time removed, of Samuel D. of Crosscliffe. Common ancestors: John Dearnaley (1682-) & Hanna.

There is a third option: John was known to Samuel by being a neighbour and a literate responsible person.

Birth:
John Dearnaley was born in December 1779 at Woodhead, Cheshire, England.

John Dearnaley was the son of Samuel Dearnaley and Mary Newton.

Baptism:
John Dearnaley was baptised on 19 January 1780 at Woodhead, Cheshire, England.

Marriage:
John Dearnaley married Mary Lawton on 7 July 1799 at Mottram-in-Longdendale, Cheshire, England,
'both of this parish'
witnesses: John Tinker & John Bottomley.

Residence:
about 1800 John Dearnaley lived at Whitfield, Derbyshire, England,
DEARNALLY, Hannah 05 Jun 1803      dau. of John and Mary DEARNLEY of Whitfield in Derbyshire.

Note:
on 17 November 1814
Named as executor in Samuel D's will. see Samuel Dearneley
The relationship between these two has not yet been found.

N.B. When researching, beware of the two different marriages of Samuel Ds to Mary Newtons - they throw me every time!! MED.

Residence:
on 19 April 1817 John Dearnaley lived at Whitfield, Glossop, Derbyshire, England,
'John Dearneley of Whitfield, Derbyshire - School Master' recorded at Probate of Samuel D's estate.
see Samuel Dearneley.

Note:
in 1825
John was a witness (and almost certainly scribe) for Joshua Roberts of Deepclough, dated 1825, proved Lichfield 1827. Interestingly the other witness is Sarah Hig.b.t.m who I suspect becomes the second wife of JD in 1826. - HG.

Residence:
in 1826 John Dearnaley lived at Whitfield, Glossop, Derbyshire, England.

Note:
in 1826
John was co-executor of Samuel Roberts of Hollingworth, dated 1826, proved Chester 1827 and also Lichfield ('Quo ad Bona') 1827. The other executors are the testator's son and brother, both of Glossop. - HG.

Marriage:
John Dearnaley married Sarah Hegginbottom on 7 February 1826 at All Saints Church, Glossop, Derbyshire, England,
John Dearnaley a widower of Glossop & Sarah Higginbottom a spinster of Glossop, by Licence.
Witnesses: Thos Dearnaley & Mary Bennett.

Will:
John Dearnaley left a will on 1 December 1842.
Thomas Dearnaley of Tintwistle, Land Agent (brother) & Sarah Dearnaley of Whitfield widow, were the executors.

Note:
between 1843 and 1860
At the very start of John Dearnaley's will in a very simple statement he leaves a small sum of money to his grand-daughter Mary Hurst, the daughter of William Hurst, currently somewhere in America, payable when she reaches 25.
This caused executor brother Thomas and the taxman some problems, as she could not be found - a note in 1858 says 'Legacy not yet claimed. MH must be 21 [did he mean 25?] if living'. Thomas had told the taxman in 1858 'Mary Hurst went to America with her father 10 [? did he mean at least 10?] years ago, not since heard of'. Meanwhile the duty on her legacy could of course not be extorted.
'1860 Widow still living. Legacy not yet claimed'. Then in 1868 'Widow still living'.
Mary was apparently finally found (but no info as to where she was or under what name), because the duty was paid - in 1860.
'At'd 25 about 1854' (surely means 1851?).
The IR26 record is finally and probably thankfully annotated at closure of the trusts: 'Widow died 9 May 1869'; 'Catherine d 1903 - July 18 1903'.
- Harriet Garfitt.

Death:
John Dearnaley died on 4 January 1843 at Glossop, Derbyshire, England, at age 63 years and 1 month
Death Duty record IR26/1636 f206, 1843.

Burial:
John Dearnaley was buried on 11 January 1843 at Glossop, Derbyshire, England,

Probate:
his estate was probated on 24 March 1843 at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England.

Occupation:
in 1826 John Dearnaley was a Schoolmaster.

Occupation:
in 1835 at Hague's Charity School, Whitfield, Glossop, Derbyshire, England, John Dearnaley was a Schoolmaster
