Mary's wedding was witnessed by John Newton in 1776 and George Newton was a co-signatory on the licence
(father & brother). Sarah's wedding was witnessed by George Newton in 1778.
The Joseph Tinker who witnessed Samuel's marriage licence was also witness to a large number of weddings
in Mottram. The 1785 will of one Betty Hadfield indicates that Joseph Tinker was parish clerk at that time. -JAD.
This must be the Sam mentioned below - an Admiral Tollemache is mentioned in Samuel's will.

I Samuel Dearnaley of Woodhead in the parish of Mottram in longdendale
in the County Palatine of Chester farmer considering the uncertainty of this
mortal life and being weak in body but of sound mind memory and understanding
praised be God for the same do make this my last Will and Testament in manner
and form following. First I order and direct the Executors hereinafter named to see
me decently interred. And it is my mind that all my just debts funeral and testamen-
-tary expenses be paid and discharged as soon as conveniently can be after my
death. And I give and bequeath to my daughter Mary the wife of Obadiah
Porritt the sum of two hundred and forty pounds. I give and bequeath to my
daughter Grace the sum of two hundred and forty. I give and bequeath to my
daug Whitehead I give the sum of thirty pounds. To my granddaughter Alice
Interlined: and to my grandson Daniel Whitehead I give the sum of thirty pounds.

my personal property hereinafter mentioned to and with the payment
of the same. And as my son in law Benjamin Green who married my daughter
Betty stands indebted to me in a considerable sum of money which I forgive
him and exonerate him from the payment thereof. And in respect of all
my stock of cattle hay corn and potatoes either growing upon the Farm
(which I hold and occupy as tenant at will under Admiral Tollemache Esq
being situate at Woodhead aforesaid) or in my outbuilding Farming utensils
household goods and furniture it is my mind that the same shall be valued
as soon as reasonably can be after my death by some proper person or
persons. And after such valuation it is my mind that my Executors shall sell
the same either by public auction or by private contract as they may see
proper. And the money arising from such sale after repaying the expenses
thereof and after payment of the next half years rent leys and taxes
becoming due thereon together with any mortgage security or any other
security for money book debts and all the residue of my Estate and Effects
whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature or description the same
may be and not hereinbefore disposed of I give and bequeath in equal shares
to my four sons viz John Dearnaly Samuel Dearnaley Thomas Dearnaley
and George Dearnaley. And I authorise my Executors to call in all my
money out at interest on mortgage or otherwise and to collect all book debts as soon as
possible after my death so that the execution of this my Will may be orderly
and conveniently disposed of. And it is my Will that my Executors or either of their widows
or either of their sons or advisors shall not be
liable to make good any loss or losses that shall or may happen or occur in
the calling in of any money according to the directions of this my Will or in
pursuing any other matter relating to or concerning the execution of this
my Will. But that all my said children (my said grandchildren to be considered
as one child) shall bear and sustain an equal share of any loss or losses
which may occur or happen as aforesaid. And it is my Will that my sons
or either of them their or either of their executors or advisers shall and may
pay and reimburse themselves and himself out of my Estate and Effects all
reasonable costs charges and expenses whatsoever that they or other or one
of them shall or may bear pay and sustain in the execution of this my Will.
And lastly I do nominate constitute and appoint my said two sons John
Dearnaley and Thomas Dearnaley joint Executors of this my last Will
and Testament hereby revoking and making void any former will
by me howsoever
made and witness whereof I have hereinto this my last Will and Testament
set my hand and seal this eight day of July one thousand eight hundred
and thirty two – Samuel Dearnaly – Signed sealed published
and declared to be the last Will and Testament of the within written testator
who at his request and in his presence and in the presence of each other we

was granted having been first sworn by comon duly to administer.
Suggested correction
With regard to the section in red in the above, it would appear that the copyist started to accidentally repeat a line already copied, realised his mistake, wasn’t prepared to rewrite the whole page, so skipped a few words to avoid writing “ … daughter Samuel Whitehead …” and carried on. Below the accidental repetition is in red and a guess at the missing words is given in italics. Later in the will Samuel says my said grandchildren to be considered as one child. Given that no other grandchildren get a mention, it seems likely that Hannah, the mother of the three named grandchildren, pre-deceased her father.

Mind is that all my Debts Funeral Expenses and the Probate of this my Will shall
be fully paid discharged and satisfied by my Executors hereinafter named - And
whereas I have surrendered All my Copyhold Estates within the Manor of Wakefield
in the County of York according to the Custom of the said Manor To such Uses as I should
declare in and by my last Will and Testament Now I do declare such Uses to be as
hereinafter is mentioned concerning the same - I give and devise to Elizabeth my
loving wife All that Messuage or Tenement at Hoylandswaine in the Parish of Silkstone

the said Room or Dwellinghouse whichsoever shall be her Choice and also for her necessary
Use the same to be delivered to her by my Executors upon Request - I give and bequeath
to my Son John Dearnalley the Sum of One Hundred Pounds to be paid to him within Twelve
Months next after my Decease by my Executors - I give and devise All that Copyhold
Messuage or Tenement with the Lands and Grounds to the same belonging called Ings in the
Township of Holm now in the Possession of John Hinchliff or his Assigns to my son Joseph
Dearnalley and his Heirs for ever - I also give to him my Son Joseph such of the
Beds and Beding in the Chamber over the House as He shall chose and a Chest in the same
Chamber - I also give to him my Son Joseph the Tenant Right which I have to the
Dwellinghouse wherein Martha Morehouse lately lived in Case my said Wife should not chose
to inhabit it to enter to immediately after my Decease but if my said Wife should be
willing to dwell therein Then it is my Will and Mind That my said Son Joseph shall
enter to it immediately after the Decease of my said Wife and enjoy it during the then
Residue of the Term which I have therein in Case He shall occupy it himself but not
otherwise - I given and bequeath All the Tenant right Title and Interest which I
have of in and to the Dwellinghouse Outhousing and Farm of Lands which I now occupy at
Woodhead under the Honourable Wilbraham Tollemache Esq with the Appurtenances unto my Son
Samuel Dearnalley his Executors and Administrators. I also give to my said Son Samuel his
Executors and Administrators All my Houshold Goods Stock of Hay Corn Straw Cattle
Sheep and all the Husbandry Gear and Implements of Husbandry all other the Stock within
or about my Dwellinghouse and Farm / Except what is above disposed of / to enter to the same
immediately after my Decease in the Situation They shall then be. I give to my Servant
Elizabeth Wordsworth the Sum of Eight Pounds to be paid to her within twelve Months next after
my Decease.

Lands and Ground to the same belonging at Hoylandswaine aforesaid from and immediately
after the Decease of my said Wife To Thomas Hayward of Woodhead my Son in Law Joseph
Hyde of Tintwistle in the County of Chester and my Son Samuel Dearnalley and the Survivors
and Survivor of them and the Heirs of such Survivor upon the Trusts and to and for the Uses
and Purposes hereinafter mentioned / that is to say / That They the said Thomas Hayward
Joseph Hyde and Samuel Dearnalley of the Survivors or Survivor of them and the Heirs of
such Survivor shall and will with all convenient Speed after the Death of my said Wife sell
and dispose of the same Estate for the best Price or Prices that they reasonably can get for
the same And that they shall pay and divide the Money arriving from such Sale to and amongst
all my Children / to wit / John Dearnalley, Samuel Dearnalley, Betty the Wife of said Joseph
Hyde and Joseph Dearnalley equally amongst them Share and Share alike Yet nevertheless my
Will and Mind further is and I do order and direct that the Part or Shares of the Money
arising from the Sale of the said Estate which shall be the Part of my said Son John shall
not be paid to him until after the Expiration of the Lease which I now have of the Farm
which I now occupy at Woodhead aforesaid But in Case my said Wife shall happen to die
before that Time that my said Son John's Share of the said Money shall be put out to Interest
upon good Security untill after the Expiration of the said Term which Interest shall from Time
to Time be paid to him But in Case He my said Son John shall make any Attempts to get the
Dwellinghouse and Farm which I now occupy at Woodhead aforesaid or any Part thereof to
himself or shall give to my said Son Samuel any Trouble or cause any Trouble to be given
to him either by himself or any other Person or Persons concerning the said Dwellinghouse
and Farm or any Part thereof in any wise That then the said Principal Sum so last above
appointed to be the Part or Share of my said Son John and to be put out at Interest as
aforesaid shall not be paid to my said Son John but shall go be paid to and equally divided
amongst the rest of my Children Share and Share alike Yet nevertheless in Case my said
Son John shall give sufficient Security to my said Son Samuel Satisfaction for his not

In the Name of God Amen I John Dearnalley of Woodhead in the Parish of
Mottram in the County Palatine of Chester being of sound and disposing Mind and
Memory / praised be for the same / Do this Second Day of July In the
Year of our Lord One thousand and seven hundred and seventy eight make publish and
declare this my last Will and Testament in Manner following - First my Will and
Mind is that all my Debts Funeral Expenses and the Probate of this my Will shall
be fully paid discharged and satisfied by my Executors hereinafter named - And
whereas I have surrendered All my Copyhold Estates within the Manor of Wakefield
in the County of York according to the Custom of the said Manor To such Uses as I should
declare in and by my last Will and Testament Now I do declare such Uses to be as
hereinafter is mentioned concerning the same - I give and devise to Elizabeth my
loving wife All that Messuage or Tenement at Hoylandswaine in the Parish of Silkstone
in the County of York with the Lands and Ground to the same belonging now in the
Tenure and Occupation of David Forth or his Undertenants To hold the same to my said
Wife and her Assigns for and during the Form of her natural Life yet nevertheless
Subject to Impeachment of Wast and which Devise I will shall be in full Lieu
Recompence and Satisfaction of all Dower and Thirds which She may have or claim of
in to or out of any real Estate which I may be possessed of at the Time of my Decease
I also give to my said Wife the Bed and Beding wherein we usually lie and such other
Things as She usually calls her own and my Desire further is that She may reside in the
House where I now lie during the Continuance of the Term therein with my Son Samuel Yet
in Case they cannot agree to live together I will that She shall have the Use of that Room
called the parlour with full and free Liberty of Ingress Egress and Regress to and from the
same during the Continuance of the Term which I have therein or of that little House where
Martha Morehouse lately inhabited lately repaired at her Election and in either Case I will
that She shall chose such Things of my Houshold Goods as will be sufficient to furnish
the said Room or Dwellinghouse whichsoever shall be her Choice and also for her necessary
Use the same to be delivered to her by my Executors upon Request - I give and bequeath
to my Son John Dearnalley the Sum of One Hundred Pounds to be paid to him within Twelve
Months next after my Decease by my Executors - I give and devise All that Copyhold
Messuage or Tenement with the Lands and Grounds to the same belonging called Ings in the
Township of Holm now in the Possession of John Hinchliff or his Assigns to my son Joseph
Dearnalley and his Heirs for ever - I also give to him my Son Joseph such of the
Beds and Beding in the Chamber over the House as He shall chose and a Chest in the same
Chamber - I also give to him my Son Joseph the Tenant Right which I have to the
Dwellinghouse wherein Martha Morehouse lately lived in Case my said Wife should not chose
to inhabit it to enter to immediately after my Decease but if my said Wife should be
willing to dwell therein Then it is my Will and Mind That my said Son Joseph shall
enter to it immediately after the Decease of my said Wife and enjoy it during the then
Residue of the Term which I have therein in Case He shall occupy it himself but not
otherwise - I given and bequeath All the Tenant right Title and Interest which I
have of in and to the Dwellinghouse Outhousing and Farm of Lands which I now occupy at
Woodhead under the Honourable Wilbraham Tollemache Esq with the Appurtenances unto my Son
Samuel Dearnalley his Executors and Administrators. I also give to my said Son Samuel his
Executors and Administrators All my Houshold Goods Stock of Hay Corn Straw Cattle
Sheep and all the Husbandry Gear and Implements of Husbandry all other the Stock within
or about my Dwellinghouse and Farm / Except what is above disposed of / to enter to the same
immediately after my Decease in the Situation They shall then be. I give to my Servant
Elizabeth Wordsworth the Sum of Eight Pounds to be paid to her within twelve Months next after
my Decease.

And my Will and Mind further is that in Case the provision above made for my said Wife shall
in the Opinion of the Executors be too little for her Maintenance and Support That they shall
out of my Effects make such further Allowance to her as They Shall think requisite during the
Term of her natural Life - I give and devise All that Messuage or Tenement with the
Lands and Ground to the same belonging at Hoylandswaine aforesaid from and immediately
after the Decease of my said Wife To Thomas Hayward of Woodhead my Son in Law Joseph
Hyde of Tintwistle in the County of Chester and my Son Samuel Dearnalley and the Survivors
and Survivor of them and the Heirs of such Survivor upon the Trusts and to and for the Uses
and Purposes hereinafter mentioned / that is to say / That They the said Thomas Hayward
Joseph Hyde and Samuel Dearnalley of the Survivors or Survivor of them and the Heirs of
such Survivor shall and will with all convenient Speed after the Death of my said Wife sell
and dispose of the same Estate for the best Price or Prices that they reasonably can get for
the same And that they shall pay and divide the Money arriving from such Sale to and amongst
all my Children / to wit / John Dearnalley, Samuel Dearnalley, Betty the Wife of said Joseph
Hyde and Joseph Dearnalley equally amongst them Share and Share alike Yet nevertheless my
Will and Mind further is and I do order and direct that the Part or Shares of the Money
arising from the Sale of the said Estate which shall be the Part of my said Son John shall
not be paid to him until after the Expiration of the Lease which I now have of the Farm
which I now occupy at Woodhead aforesaid But in Case my said Wife shall happen to die
before that Time that my said Son John's Share of the said Money shall be put out to Interest
upon good Security untill after the Expiration of the said Term which Interest shall from Time
to Time be paid to him But in Case He my said Son John shall make any Attempts to get the
Dwellinghouse and Farm which I now occupy at Woodhead aforesaid or any Part thereof to
himself or shall give to my said Son Samuel any Trouble or cause any Trouble to be given
to him either by himself or any other Person or Persons concerning the said Dwellinghouse
and Farm or any Part thereof in any wise That then the said Principal Sum so last above
appointed to be the Part or Share of my said Son John and to be put out at Interest as
aforesaid shall not be paid to my said Son John but shall go be paid to and equally divided
amongst the rest of my Children Share and Share alike Yet nevertheless in Case my said
Son John shall give sufficient Security to my said Son Samuel Satisfaction for his not
